What is the kimchi premium
The kimchi premium (김치 프리미엄) is the price gap when the same coin trades more expensive on Korean exchanges than on overseas exchanges. This usually happens when domestic buying enthusiasm is strong. Conversely, when Korean prices are lower than overseas, it is called a reverse kimchi premium (역프리미엄) or a Korea discount.
At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading around $76,399.61, up 9.7% on the day. During sharp rallies, Korean investor sentiment tends to overheat faster than overseas, which often widens the kimchi premium.
Why it happens
Korean exchanges have restrictions on KRW deposits/withdrawals and capital movement, making arbitrage with overseas exchanges difficult to execute instantly. When buying pressure surges, or when regulatory issues and exchange rate moves overlap, the premium expands. Recently, in some intervals, the premium indicator went negative and a reverse premium was observed.
What to watch when using it for entry timing
By the time the premium has expanded significantly, much of the sharp price rise has often already happened. So rather than a standalone trading signal, it is better used as a supplementary indicator to check whether the market is overheated.
A reverse premium period can be a sign that Korean buying sentiment has contracted. Being cheaper than overseas does not automatically mean it is favorable. You also need to check withdrawal fees, order book differences by exchange, and tax treatment.
Korean exchange fee and tax checklist
Trading fees vary by exchange and membership tier, and withdrawal fees change depending on each coin's network conditions. Crypto income tax rules and deduction limits can also differ depending on the time of the trade and each exchange's withholding method. So it is safer to check the relevant exchange's official notices before actually trading.
