Funding rates are a temperature gauge for long/short positioning
Bitcoin perpetual futures have no expiration. Instead, to keep the futures price close to the spot price, a cost is exchanged between longs and shorts at regular intervals. That cost is the funding rate.
When long positions dominate, the funding rate is positive; when short positions dominate, it is negative. The larger the number, the more capital is tilted to one side. The funding rate reveals market temperature that is easy to miss when looking at price alone.
How to check funding rates by exchange
Major futures exchanges such as Binance and Bitget provide real-time funding rate figures in their funding rate tabs. Funding rate intervals and calculation methods can differ by exchange, so direct comparison is necessary. To view multiple exchanges at once, you can use an aggregated indicator site such as CoinGlass.
Practical checklist
1. A strongly positive funding rate means overheated longs
This is a zone where upside bets are excessively crowded. Further upside may be limited, and even a small drop can trigger a chain of long liquidations.
2. A sharply negative funding rate means overheated shorts
This signals too many downside bets. If price rebounds, a sharp rise to force short position liquidations—a so-called short squeeze—can appear.
3. Watch price and funding rate direction together
If price is rising while the funding rate is falling, it can be interpreted as weak market conviction in the rally.
4. Check differences between exchanges
If the funding rate spikes only on one exchange, it may be a temporary supply-demand distortion. Don't mistake it for overall market sentiment.
As of 2 p.m. today, Bitcoin is at $81,004.39, up 4.136% over the past 24 hours. With the price pushed down to the $77,000 range on Middle East risk before recovering $80,000, it is hard to determine direction from price alone. In this kind of market, the funding rate can serve as a secondary compass showing whether capital is tilted toward longs or shorts.
The funding rate is not a standalone trading signal; it becomes more meaningful when viewed alongside sentiment indicators such as the Fear & Greed Index.
